The REAL ID Act is an Act that sets federal standards for state driver’s licenses. The Federal government passed this Act requiring states to issue identification to increase their security standards.
A REAL ID issued by North Carolina (either a Driver’s License, learner’s permit, or ID card) has a gold start in the upper right corner.
Why Would I Need a REAL ID Card?
Although REAL ID licenses and ID cards are not mandatory, you may find them useful. If you do not have a REAL ID, beginning October of 2021, you will need to provide additional identification with your current license to board flights domestically.
What If My Name Does Not Match My Birth Certificate or Other Documents?
If your name on your license does not match your birth certificate, you will have to show proof of a name change, which may include a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or other documents from the Register of Deeds of the county in which you live.
Our team guides clients through the name change process all over Southeaster North Carolina, including Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender Counties. Give us a call at 910-769-6884 so we can begin helping you.
